The Winter Companion
(Parish Orphans of Devon #4)
Mimi Matthews
Neville Cross/Clara Hartwright

A winter reunion for the orphans brings romance for Neville Cross in Book 4 of Mimi Matthews’ USA Today bestselling Parish Orphans of Devon series.
She Needed to be Seen…
As a lady’s companion, Clara Hartwright never receives much attention from anyone. And that’s precisely how she likes it. With a stormy past, and an unconventional plan for her future, it’s far safer to remain invisible. But when her new employer is invited to a month-long holiday at a remote coastal abbey, Clara discovers that she may not be as invisible as she’d hoped. At least, not as far as one gentleman is concerned.
He Wanted to be Heard…
Neville Cross has always been more comfortable with animals than people. An accident in his youth has left him with a brain injury that affects his speech. Forming the words to speak to his childhood friends is difficult enough. Finding the right things to say to a lovely young lady’s companion seems downright impossible. But Miss Hartwright is no ordinary companion. In fact, there may not be anything ordinary about her at all.
During a bleak Devon winter, two sensitive souls forge an unexpected friendship. But when Clara needs him most, will Neville find the courage to face his fears? Or is saying goodbye to her the most heroic thing he can do?
The Winter Companion is the fourth book in Mimi Matthews’s series the “Parish Orphans of Devon”. This is actually the first book I’ve had the pleasure of reading from Ms. Matthews. I’ve heard so many positive things about her books and am now kicking myself for not picking up her books before now! 😉 I truly was impressed with this story and am definitely going back to read her previous books! So happy to have found a new author to read and follow!
Neville Cross along with his three friends, the heroes from the previous books in this series were parish orphans. When a childhood accident leaves Neville with a speech impediment, he retreats to the care of animals where he feels more comfortable.
Clara Hartwright is a lady’s companion and finds herself at Greyfriar’s Abbey at Christmas time with her new employer. Clara has big dreams and is only working as a companion temporarily to help fund her brother’s education.
I absolutely loved Clara and Neville, they were such fabulous characters! They are kind, sweet, loving people who have personalities that hold them back. Clara holds herself back because of an incident in her past and Neville’s speech impediment has him fearful of moving forward. As these two become friends, they form a bond and wish for something more. There is an attraction and they are drawn to each other, but their paths seem to be going in different directions.
What a beautifully written story of two people who truly deserved to find love! I was truly impressed with Ms. Matthews’s writing style and the detailed descriptions of the settings. I loved that she gave Clara and Neville time to know each other and to allow their friendship to grow into love. Their storyline with the Dartmoor ponies and Bertie the pug was absolutely perfect for them and a joy to read. They were such a special couple and they truly stole my heart! I loved getting glimpses of the previous characters from the series and I can’t wait to go back and read their individual stories.
Words can’t describe how much I enjoyed this book! As I mentioned earlier, I have not read the previous books in this series, but had no problem keeping up with the storyline and felt this book could easily be read as a standalone. But after meeting all the fascinating characters from the previous books, I am definitely going back to read their stories! Highly recommend this book and author!
